Kiki
Just do your work. And if the world needs your work it will come and get you. And if it doesn’t, do your work anyway. You can have fantasies about having control over the world, but I know I can barely control my kitchen sink. That is the grace I’m given. Because when one can control things, one is limited to one’s own vision.

cardemon, lots.

Ofcourse, sugar. Make it sweet!

“A good teacher can never be fixed in a routine. Each moment requires a sensitive mind that is constantly changing and constantly adapting. A teacher must never impose his students to fit his favorite pattern. A good teacher protects his students from his own influence. A teacher is never a giver of truth; he is a guide, a pointer to the truth that each student must find for himself. I am not teaching you anything. I just help you to explore yourself.”

Catherine Destivelle
My gift for you today.
Jam packed with fascinating movement! The climbing prowess of Catherine Destivelle (and her short shorts, love them!) and the excellent textile moves of the Dogon tribespeople. Oh and the goodluck music. Brilliant.

Truth
"...if your yoga does not connect you to a
place in yourself that is free of gossip, comparison and lack, it is not
serving you. if your teacher does not facilitate this kind of practice,
they’re not teaching yoga, they’re teaching you poses...."
-- Stacey Moves

What one thing do you do for yourself each day, just because it makes you feel good?
I take time before leaving the house. I'm not naturally a morning person and I really don't like being rushed. Ever. So on a daily basis that means waking up with enough time to stretch a little, shower (mostly ; ), prepare a proper breakfast, drink coffee, put on an outfit (rather than “any old thing,”) put on jewelry and perfume. Even on the days I teach at silly'o'clock.
It's important to me and it means I greet the world ready.
be kind to yourself, you're wonderful.

Change
"WE MUST BE THE CHANGE WE WANT TO SEE IN THE WORLD. we must participate with our deeds, our words, our practice. we must cultivate compassion in our hearts, make choices that support our voices and we will see the shift as a society toward this world being a better place.
there is nothing without tension, polarity
no alertness, no open space
i cannot be what i long to be without being what i also hate about myself- that’s the starting point
the work is to identify our habits and grow from that absence of consciousness
to bring light to the dark
ground down- exhale, gravity, root
rise up- inhale, consciousness, expand
in my loneliness and fear i am most universally loving and stable
in not knowing i know everything
in anger i understand"
(in my sleep i dreamed this poem)
"someone i loved once gave me
a box full of darkness
it took me years to understand
that this, too, was a gift.”

The man.Bruce Lee had me up to three miles a day, really at a good pace. We’d run the three miles in twenty-one or twenty-two minutes. Just under eight minutes a mile [Note: when running on his own in 1968, Lee would get his time down to six-and-a half minutes per mile]. So this morning he said to me “We’re going to go five.” I said, “Bruce, I can’t go five. I’m a helluva lot older than you are, and I can’t do five.” He said, “When we get to three, we’ll shift gears and it’s only two more and you’ll do it.” I said “Okay, hell, I’ll go for it.” So we get to three, we go into the fourth mile and I’m okay for three or four minutes, and then I really begin to give out. I’m tired, my heart’s pounding, I can’t go any more and so I say to him, “Bruce if I run any more,” –and we’re still running-”if I run any more I’m liable to have a heart attack and die.” He said, “Then die.” It made me so mad that I went the full five miles. Afterward I went to the shower and then I wanted to talk to him about it. I said, you know, “Why did you say that?” He said, “Because you might as well be dead. Seriously, if you always put limits on what you can do, physical or anything else, it’ll spread over into the rest of your life. It’ll spread into your work, into your morality, into your entire being. There are no limits. There are plateaus, but you must not stay there, you must go beyond them. If it kills you, it kills you. A man must constantly exceed his level.”

Something real.
This yoga stuff is just the best gift i’ve ever given myself. Something sustainable and real and very, very deep.

Weekend!
This weekend find the songs that make you dance and the joys that feel like they could’ve been made for you.

After each exhalation there is a yawning release that happens in the body, right through to the palms of the hands and down to the soles of the feet. You just have to let it happen.
It's not about doing, but letting these tiny little messages travel as far as the hands and as far as the feet allowing you to feel fully in contact with the ground.

Love details
"love is not so incomprehensible as you pretend, sweet pea. love is the
feeling we have for those we care deeply about and hold in high regard.
it can be light as the hug we give a friend or heavy as the sacrifices
we make for our children. it can be romantic, platonic, familial,
fleeting, everlasting, conditional, unconditional, imbued with sorrow,
stoked by sex, sullied by abuse, amplified by kindness, twisted by
betrayal, deepened by time, darkened by difficulty, leavened by
generosity, nourished by humor and loaded with promises that we may or
may not want to keep. the best thing you can possibly do with your life
is to tackle the motherfucking shit out of love. and, honey bun, on this
front, i think you have some work to do."

“art like any other disaster happens very slowly and then all at once”
— Anne Enright in LRB on Dorothy Cross’s exhibition at Turner Contemporary
the first image is a work Cross made as an extension of Ghost Ship, 1999. The Ghostship (second image) was a personal homage to the many light ships which once marked dangerous reefs around the Irish coast, but have now all but dissappeared. The ship was covered in luminous paint and at nightfall was illuminated to glow and fade in cycles over a three hour period.

Distinctions
The seascape shifts
Between the minutest interstices of time
Blue is blue.
A pine-branch
Tugs at the eye: the eye
Returns to grey-blue, blue-black or indigo
Or it returns, simply,
To blue-after-the-pine-branch.
Here, there is no question of aberrations
Into pinks, golds or mauves:
This is the variation Pater indicated
But failed to prove.
Art exists at a remove
Evocation, at two,
Discusses a blue that someone
Heard someone talking about.
