Traditionally, Japanese pearl diving was done by women who were called "Ama". Men did this too, but it was predominantly a female profession. The word Ama literally means "sea woman." and its a Japanese tradition thatdates back 2000 years...if you ever get the chance try and watch the documentary Ama Girls. Fascinating!
