Bread and Roses

A million darkened kitchens, a thousand mill lofts gray,
Are touched with all the radiance that a sudden sun discloses,
For the people hear us singing: "Bread and roses! Bread and roses!"

As we come marching, marching, we battle too for men,

For they are women's children, and we mother them again.

Our lives shall not be sweated from birth until life closes;

Hearts starve as well as bodies; give us bread, but give us roses!

As we come marching, marching, unnumbered women dead

Go crying through our singing their ancient cry for bread.

Small art and love and beauty their drudging spirits knew.

Yes, it is bread we fight for - but we fight for roses, too!

As we come marching, marching, we bring the greater days.

The rising of the women means the rising of the race.

No more the drudge and idler - ten that toil where one reposes,

But a sharing of life's glories: Bread and roses! Bread and roses!

-- James Oppenheim Joan Baez and Mimi Farina sing Bread and Roses.

Imagine

Imagine a world where your friend says
“I can’t eat that, I’ll get fat”

and you’re natural response was not

“no, you won’t”

But

“so what?”…………………………

Read this.

I think we should make it come true.

I have all of these skills. I am proud of that fact.
Whilst we are on the subject of ice cream if you are ever in London then treat yourself to the  mascarpone & Fig ice cream (with chocolate if you really know how to live) from gelateria3bis on Park Street, Borough Market. One of the best things I have ever put in my mouth....

Something to  read... physically-photoshopping-ourselves-out-of-reality

"Here’s an outrageous idea: What would happen if confident, happy, beautiful women decided to forego painful and expensive anti-aging procedures, breast lifts and enhancements, liposuction, all over hair removal or tanning regimens? How could that change the way their daughters, students, friends, nieces and coworkers perceived themselves and their own “flawed,” lined, real faces? Their own varied-looking and perfectly functional breasts, behinds, thighs, arms and abs? How could simply owning and (treating kindly and speaking nicely about) our so-called “imperfect” bodies affect not only our own lives, but those over whom we have influence? Is it possible to slowly but deliberately change the perception of these “flaws” as something to shame, hide and fix at any cost to something acceptable and embraceable in all their human, womanly real-ness? We say yes."

"Once, Picasso was asked what his paintings meant. He said, “Do you ever know what the birds are singing? You don’t. But you listen to them anyway.” So, sometimes with art, it is important just to look."

Libra
This is a week for very little things. It’s a week for sweet bright mornings, for sweaters and blankets on cool nights, for quiet moments on park benches, for driving out to the lake just to sit there and watch the water and feel the sun. This week will be filled with small sweet satisfactions that can build on each other, moment by moment, until they’re enough to get you through this week. Let them make you stronger, let them stay in the back of your head, to hold onto for later, let them be enough for now.
